One of the better pool games to hit mobile phones comes our way courtesy of Gameloft, and we give it the final score here.
Pool has always been kind of a quirky sport to emulate into a video game, if mainly for the physics of the pool ball themselves and trying to capture the nature of the general gameplay into something that must be played with a controller. A few of these games have worked really well, while others have become less than desirable. Fortunately, Midnight Pool from Gameloft falls into the good category, and it's quite simply one of the better mobile pool games out there.
One of the big things going for Midnight Pool is the fact that the gameplay is easy to follow, but still has a style all its own that is just as addictive as the real thing. The way that the aiming works with the cursor allows you to get a bead on your shots pretty easily, and the speed system is pretty well balanced. So if you want to go for a power shot, it's pretty much a snap to pull off. Furthermore, you can customize your pool experience, right down to the color of your table and your pool stick- a nice touch.
Then you've got the game's tournament mode, pitting you against a number of unique and sometimes slick characters that have personalities and play styles all their own. This adds a great deal of variety to the game and will keep you challenged for hours on end. You can even bet some money and work up your cash flow, which will come in handy for future matches.
The presentation, while simple, works perfectly, with an over-the-table view that gives you a wide-open angle of what to see, and some cool little tunes, including a familiar Lynyrd Skynyrd ditty that's somewhat catchy.
Midnight Pool may not be everyone's cup of tea, but those who want to take their favorite sport on the go without worrying about chalking up their fingers will be delighted with Gameloft's latest craftwork. Give it a download and see who you can hustle.
What's Hot: Easy to play and a lot of fun.
What's Not: Should probably be a pool fan to begin with.
