Ninja Throw HD
Strike the gong in Chillingo's shuriken flying puzzler.
At this point, it seems like Chillingo's ultimate goal is to hold the Guinness World Record for releasing the most physics based puzzle games. There's one every week.
At least on the positive side, the company continues to turn in solid work. Case in point, Ninja Throw HD. If you're an iPhone or iPad gaming vet, you've probably enjoyed games like this before. None of them, however, will push you to think as hard this one.
The goal is simple enough (aren't they all?). You, as a pajama wearing ninja, must hit a gong with a throwing star, AKA a shuriken. Succeed, and you move to the next level.
If only it were easy, though. The developers at Hadron Solutions do a great job throwing obstacles your way, from giant wooden posts to TNT that explodes upon impact.
Some even move or temporarily disappear, forcing you to time the shuriken just right. This also extends to Hakaze Wind Spirits that blow in specific directions, forcing you to create somewhat of a chain reaction while threading the needle between two moving platforms. Meanwhile, you have the Mystical Sensei, who repels or sometimes attracts the deadly weapon, making puzzles even more challenging.
Ultimately, you must plan a few steps ahead and put in serious thought before making a single throw. Why? Because you only have a set number of shurikens to spare, and the less you use, the higher the score per puzzle.
It's a fun game overall, just not groundbreaking. At the end of the day, we had no trouble putting it down, or completing a stage with the lowest number of points to move to the next one.
The game's definitely worth a look. Just don't expect the next evolution of the puzzle genre.
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.
What's Hot: Challenging, calming visuals and music, tons of puzzles, universal.
What's Not: A bit bland, slow moving shuriken.
