Popeye Kart Racing
Don't be a Wimpy, especially in Popeye Kart Racing, a fantastic new cell phone game from mForma.
It's kind of hard to place Popeye and his crew into any kind of racing game. After all, they're based on old-school cartoons and the plot usually revolves around Popeye usually sucking up some spinach and knocking someone into the next stratosphere if they pick on Olive Oyl or one of Popeye's friends. Racing doesn't enter the picture at all. However, leave it up to mForma to craft a likable cart racing game with all the characters, and a playable one at that.
Popeye Kart lets you choose from a number of familiar faces in Popeye's cast, including Olive Oyl, Bluto, and the hamburger-loving Wimpy, and then you can take to one of four different areas, each laced with three tracks to complete.
As you compete, you can power slide across the roads and pick up power ups that allow you great temporary powers, like being able to launch cans at opponents, fire off some oil slicks, and get some invincibility. It's a typical variety, but it still works here.
Kudos to the control system. It feels just like a cart racing game should, very solid and very refined. You can even perform power slides with ease thanks to a little jump function that works efficiently. The graphics represent an excellent cartoony style, and the racing action moves rather fast. As for the sound, it's minimal, but the Popeye theme is perfectly intact, and that's all a fan could ask.
If the game has any pratfalls, it's that it's way too easy to complete. The AI isn't that challenging and multiplayer is really out the window. However, there's still lots of racing action to enjoy from this title, an unpredictable delight that manages to mix Popeye and racing together, even if the two haven't really met. Skip the spinach and give this game a try.
What's Hot: Very solid, refined controls make it a blast to play.
What's Not: Too easy to complete!
