Zombieville USA 2
Shred undead freaks for cash in this brain-splattering sequel.
Mika Mobile has achieved much success on the App Store, thanks in part to Zombieville USA. Released in 2009, this addictive side scrolling shooter let players get their undead blasting fix on the go.
Now Zombieville USA 2 has shambled onto iPhone and iPad (universal, $0.99), and while we expected a bit more from it, there's no denying the game's overall quality and near irresistible brain splattering action.
Everything about this sequel screams more. You have more characters to choose from, including the familiar redneck from the original effort, as well as a police officer and clown.
In addition, there are more weapons to play with, like the pistol, shotgun, chainsaw, assault rifle, flamethrower, SMG and plenty more, all of which feature upgrades to make them even more powerful.
On top of that, you now have skills that imbue the selected hero with game changing abilities. Similar to the weapons, you can bring three into a fight, and they run the gamut, from granting super speed to making the character more efficient with melee weapons.
As for the actual game, it's one zombie slaughtering good time. Instead of simply moving left to right, you're free to walk a full 360 degrees, thanks to the on-screen d-pad. You can no longer enter houses to acquire money and ammo, but enemies drop a significant amount, while blasting mailboxes, garbage cans and other objects yield plenty of loot.
To that end, Zombieville USA 2 is much more of a grind than its predecessor. You must replay levels countless times to increase your bank account. In fact, later stages won't unlock until you kill a certain number of zombies.
That said, the game packs one heck of a challenge, while the inclusion of off and online co-op (while a little screwy) makes things easier. There's also iCloud support, which gives you the opportunity to switch devices and pick up where you left off.
Despite being repetitive, Zombieville USA 2 still offers several hours of monster slaying, complete with 2D cartoon graphics and copious amounts of gore. It won't take long to unlock everything, but the journey is worth the modest amount of cash. Besides, blowing a zombie's brains out is quite the guilty pleasure.
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.
What's Hot: Blasting through hordes of zombies, more weapons, skills, tons of gore, co-op play, universal, $0.99.
What's Not: Lots of grinding.
