Bullet Time HD

Mutants took everything John Irish loved. Well, except his guns. Big mistake.

After watching the official trailer for Bullet Time HD on YouTube, we couldn't help but notice a comment that seemed apropos, given the game's high production values and impressive level of polish.

Looks cool, what's the price?

It's an honest question, since this recently released dual stick shooter boasts quality visuals, enjoyable mutant blasting fun, tons of cool weapons and even online co-op for up to three people.

Turns out, the game is free and well worth your time.

In it, you play as John Irish, a pissed off and heavily armed guy out for revenge against the mutants that terrorized his family.

To seek justice, you'll explore a post apocalyptic environment littered with busted cars, debris and even dead bodies hanging from nooses. In other words, the world is seriously FUBAR.

Mutants come in various shapes and sizes, from standard level grunts to monsters that travel underground and even one bad hombre operating a mortar.

That said, this is a shoot first, ask questions later type of experience. You go in guns blazing, hitting explosive barrels for increased damage while picking up silver along the way, which in turn can be used to acquire guns with such cool names as the Fast & Furious rifle and the Suckerpunch rocket launcher.

On top of that, the game also includes hard to acquire crystals that also go towards weapons (Impaler crossbow, Boomstick shotgun) and other fun items, such as clothing and headgear. You can grind it out in the hopes of stockpiling these gems, or spend some real world cash to speed things along; ten cost $0.99.

It's in your best interest to play dress-up with Mr. Irish, only because bits of clothing improve his overall stats, transforming him into a more efficient killing machine.

The single player mode is quite addictive, and there's also multiplayer. Connecting takes but a few seconds, and the action remains smooth for the most part. Unfortunately, with no way to effectively communicate, the other players sometimes go off and do their own thing.

Bullet Time HD can be a bit of a grind, but it's without question one of the best free games on the App Store. At zero dollars, there's no excuse to avoid it.

Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later.

What's Hot: Free dual stick shooting fun, satisfying number of weapons and items, multiple trophies, co-op for up to three players, universal.

What's Not: Grinding for crystals, a lack of communication in multiplayer.

4/5
