Retro Studios' Mystery Game: Metroid Or Donkey Kong?
A recent Tweet may point to a new 3DS title starring Samus Aran...or maybe...Nintendo's huggable ape.
This week, the Nintendo community was abuzz over the news that Retro Studios had hired Eric Kozlowsky, formerly of acclaimed PlayStation 3 developer Naughty Dog; aka Uncharted 3.
What really grabbed fans' collective attention, though, was a recently deleted Tweet from Eric that read as follows:
"One of my co-workers brought in EVERY season of MST3K! Crunch time is going to be WAY more tolerable this year!"
As expected, this led to some good old fashioned speculation. Does this mean Retro plans to release a game for Nintendo this year? Is it for Wii U? How about 3DS?
If we had to guess, it's a Wii U launch title. That would be the safest bet, and it's in Nintendo's best interest to have as many games as possible.
On the flip side, and with 3DS selling extremely well, this could also mean a handheld game is in Retro's future, and it may involve a franchise the company's worked with before.
First up is Metroid. Retro became famous for its work on the Metroid Prime series on both GameCube and Wii. When it came time to deliver classic Metroid goodness to DS, Nintendo somewhat faltered, opting for Metroid Prime Pinball and the multiplayer focused Metroid Prime Hunters, neither of which held a proverbial candle to Metroid Fusion on Game Boy Advance, or even Zero Mission, for that matter.
Since we're long overdue for a full-fledged handheld Metroid, perhaps this exciting game involves bounty hunter Samus Aran. Maybe this is the portable Metroid to end all Metroids.
On the flip side is Donkey Kong. Retro did a remarkable job on the 2010 Wii hit, Donkey Kong Country Returns, bringing back fond memories of the beloved Super Nintendo series. It's been a long time since we've had a dedicated Donkey Kong on a Nintendo system, so yeah, a new title for 3DS makes a ton of sense.
Taking this into account, what do you think Retro's up to. Is there a new Metroid and/or Donkey Kong on the way? Is this is a new game entirely? Wii U? 3DS? Let us know.
