Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir Preview
Nintendo hopes to make Augmented Reality fun in this supernatural thriller, coming to a Friday the 13th near you.
Thus far, developers have failed to put the 3DS system's Augmented Reality feature to good use. Majesco attempted to spotlight it in last year's The Hidden, but poor execution and the negative reviews that followed killed the game's momentum, leaving us to wonder if AR is a silly parlor trick, nothing more.
On Friday, April 13, Nintendo hopes to make it more intriguing with Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir, a Tecmo Koei developed mystery that works in tandem with the handheld's internal and external cameras to bring ghosts into the real world, so to speak.
The game's plot revolves around a mysterious girl named Maya, who wound up inside a creepy old house cursed by a strange and dangerous woman in black.
It's up to you to free Maya from this place, and to do so, you must flip through the Diary of Faces, a 16-page booklet included with each copy of the game. By focusing the 3DS external camera (AKA Camera Obscura) at its pages, you're able to interact with the spirit world.
To that end, the Diary of Faces functions as a gateway. Focus on one image, and you'll watch a video that reveals clues integral to the plot. View another, and you'll enter the house, or summon good/evil spirits.
This diary also comes into play for enjoying a variety of mini-games, including memory and hide-and-seek, with a supernatural twist, of course.
In addition to Story Mode, Spirit Photography lets you snap pictures and watch as ghostly apparitions appear. Spirit Check, meanwhile, gives you a chance to not only take photos, but also see the spirits living among you (admittedly, both modes sound exactly the same). Finally, Spirit Challenge puts a creepy image on a person's face, which you can then battle.
At this point, we're not sure what to make of this game, but it's great to know Nintendo takes Augmented Reality seriously. That said, be sure to keep Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir on your radar.
