Fat Mega Man's OK With Us
Seems like the blue bomber put on a couple of pounds (more like 60) since we last saw him.
When Capcom canceled both Mega Man Universe and Mega Man Legends 3, we chalked it up to development issues and the possibility that the blue bomber had simply lost momentum.
Now, having seen the version of Mega Man in the PlayStation 3 and Vita editions of Street Fighter X Tekken, it's clear someone working at the company is intentionally screwing with diehard fans.
How can this not be the case? More importantly, how do you (as a video game artist/programmer/producer with a heart) release what is essentially the original Mega Man character upon the masses, and even worse, age the poor guy considerably?
Bottom line, this isn't the Mega Man we're used to. It's Mega Man if he blew out his Achilles, retired and spent the next 25 years eating pizza and watching old reruns on TV. The guy's huge.
You know what, it's brilliant.
That's right. We love the design. We'll give Capcom credit for being more clever than it probably is, because the Street Fighter X Tekken Mega Man has Kick-Ass the movie written all over it. Here's some random dude that stuffed his fat butt into an ugly superhero costume and started wailing away on some muscle bound bozos.
If anything, he looks like a cosplay gone wrong, the sort of person many on the Internet make fun of on a daily basis.
Look, we've seen the blue bomber in countless games before, from traditional Mega Man titles to the Marvel vs. Capcom series. It's clear Street Fighter X Tekken is a different beast, and Capcom chose to give Mega Man a radical look.
Was it right in doing this? No. The timing couldn't be worse, given the character's history as of late. Some fans see this as a direct slap in the face, and/or the most telling piece of evidence that suggests Capcom has lost its magic touch.
We, on the other hand, think it's the publisher's way of poking fun at itself. In this super intense world of video gamers where every fan boy thinks he or she is right, that's a good thing.
