Coign of Vantage
A flick of a finger is all it takes to transform a bunch of multi-colored particles into an parrot.
The App Store has a variety of puzzle games, many of which involve falling blocks and matching three of something to make things disappear. That said, Coign of Vantage is one of the few titles that stands out in this crowded genre. Initially released as a Flash game, bobblebrook's entertaining puzzler will have you frantically swiping the iPhone and/or iPad screen while enjoying 8-bit pixel art, making it one of the more unique head-scratchers we've seen.
Similar to its PC and Mac counterpart, the game tasks you with manipulating a series of particles into one of 90 images displayed on the top right corner of the screen, be it a strawberry, hamburger or candlestick, to name a few.
The challenge comes in the form of a timer that constantly ticks down to zero, and the only way for you to survive is to form as many images as possible, thereby adding precious seconds to the clock. Ultimately, it all comes down to studying the various colors within that preview image and doing your best to line everything up. There's also a "play ten on time" mode that works exactly the same way, except you only have a minute-and-a-half to complete 10 images.
While not as complex as another one of our favorite iOS puzzle games, Blueprint 3D, Coign of Vantage is a lot of fun. We dig the concept, the controls are spot-on and the classical piano music is a welcome change from the typical video game soundtrack.
Unfortunately, and for whatever reason, the developers went a bit overboard on the hint system. Fail to solve puzzles for even a few seconds, and the game automatically shows the solution, which is quite a buzz kill. At least on the positive side, you cannot beat the game relying on hints, and bobblebrook already submitted an update to Apple that corrects the issue.
Our advice? Don't wait for the update. Coign of Vantage is one of coolest games on the App Store, and you'll thoroughly enjoy seeing jumbles of pixels come together to make cats, hearts and joysticks.
What's Hot: Ninety images to recreate, attractive pixel art, cool piano music.
What's Not: Bothersome hints.
