Electronic Arts Bullish On Android
Publishing giant sees Google's robot, raises company a Tiger.
A short while ago, there was a great disparity between iOS and Android when it came to game releases, as quality hits appearing on Google-powered devices were few and far between. Now it's somewhat different. While not on equal ground just yet, Android now competes with its rival, thanks to big-time games like Draw Something, Angry Birds Space and Where's My Water?
Of course, it's no surprise that Electronic Arts releases its games across both platforms. That said, we tracked down EA Mobile's Senior Account Lead, Autumn Brown, to learn more about the company's stance on Android (more notably Google Play), as well as its plans for the future.
Why has it taken EA this long to pay more attention to Google Play?
EA has made a commitment to the Android platform, and have been striving to bring AAA franchise titles to all users, like The Sims FreePlay and fan favorite NBA Jam. We've continued to bring some of our biggest brands to the Android Market, including Madden NFL 12 by EA Sports, launching day and date across all platforms, including console.
What will EA need to do moving forward to make a real impact on Android?
EA has definitely made a big splash on Android in the last year. At the start of 2011, we had six games available on Google Play, and our teams worked very hard to launch another 15 games, including Dead Space, Real Racing 2 and Tetris Free. There are currently 21 EA games available on Google Play, and we are committed to continuing to bring top quality titles to the platform. We just launched The Sims FreePlay, which brings one of the most recognizable franchises worldwide for free to Android for the first time. We are introducing two more fan favorites to the platform in the upcoming months, with the launch of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 and Mass Effect Infiltrator. Right now, we have six games in the top 25 paid games on Google Play, and The Sims FreePlay is currently number 12 on the top grossing chart.
Why did EA choose to release one track free of charge for Real Racing 2? Why not sell the whole game up front?
We wanted to give all users the chance to experience high quality graphics, top-notch audio and refined controls in this award-winning title. With Real Racing 2, we are offering consumers the chance to check out one of EA's premium games at no cost.
Did EA purposely release updated rosters for NBA Jam on Android to entice those consumers? Is this the biggest-selling feature to the game, next to the iOS port?
We were happy to announce NBA Jam for Google Play has updated rosters, and hope Android users will enjoy reliving the 90's nostalgia of this game while playing with their favorite players. Tim Kizrow does the voiceovers, so players can relish in classic catchphrases, plus a few new ones that were exclusively recorded for the mobile games. NBA Jam has been very well-received by consumers, and currently has over a four-star rating on Google Play.
What do you think of Amazon's tablet, Kindle Fire?
NBA Jam, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 and FIFA 12 will all be coming soon to the Kindle Fire. We'll definitely keep you posted on additional plans for this platform in the future.
