Driving to the grocery story just became the most thrilling part of your day.
[Editor's Note: We don't normally review apps outside of games, but couldn't pass this one up.]
A few years ago, I leased a 2010 Honda Accord coupe. It's a great ride, don't get me wrong, but my insurance company classifies it as a sports car, which means I pay a ridiculous amount of dough to cover a vehicle that sounds more like a sleeping baby than a Ferrari. At least on the positive side, 2XL Games' XLR8 lets me pretend I'm in command of a powerful Ford GT40 or better, a Lamborghini. If only it made paying my bills easier.
What's XLR8? The best thing that's about to happen to both you and your iOS/Android device. It's an app that turns an everyday car into a muscle machine, thanks in large part to a phone or tablet's accelerometer. Plug your device into the AUX port, and the App knows when you're idling at a stop sign/traffic light or blowing past other drivers on the highway, whereupon which it fills the inside of your car with one of five distinct engine noises, the first of which, the Classic V8 muscle car, is free. The others include a NASCAR engine, Ford GT40, Ferrari sports car and a Lamborghini Supercar; you can access these through in-app purchase.
Quite frankly, I love this thing. Now I have to make a serious decision each time I hop into the Accord: sports talk radio, or the V8, and lately, it's been the latter. The tech isn't perfect. I've had the app accelerate while in park, and you have to secure your device of choice upright for it to work, but when it does...awesome. You'll feel empowered. More importantly, it creates the illusion that your average car just came off the factory line in Detroit.
Granted, there's a downside to XLR8, that being the temptation to floor it. Beware, the app definitely messes with your head. At the same time, you'll have a blast rolling down the windows and cranking the volume while at red lights, because the clueless folks next to you will have no idea why your [insert car name here] sounds like a Ferrari. You can even press a virtual button to rev the engine; avoid doing this while driving.
Bottom line, XLR8 is one of the greatest apps I've downloaded and you should pick it up ASAP. Just remember to drive safely, and avoid getting pulled over.
What's Hot: Five different engines, V8 engine is free, automatic and manual transmissions, transforms boring errands into adrenaline-fueled thrill rides.
What's Not: You have to purchase the other four engines, tech is a bit wonky.
