Watchdog Cracks Down On Google Play Scam Apps
Developer fined nearly $80,000.
Welcome news from Europe where UK watchdog PhonepayPlus has hit a developer with a 50,000 GBP ($78,500) fine for a series of Android scam apps which left downloaders more than a little out of pocket.
As reported by BBC News, the Latvian firm had listed games which bore a striking resemblance to mobile favorites such as Angry Birds and Cut The Rope. Once installed the game's failed to load, although they did send the user three text messages at a cost of 5 GBP ($8) each. Ouch.
While clones of successful games are hardly a rarity on any of the mobile stores, this is a particularly unpleasant scam that we're pleased to see swift action being taken against. Let's hope this kind of crackdown extends globally in the future.
