Facebook Rumored To Have Hired Apple Engineers
Bespoke device could be ready by 2013.
The New York Times (via Pocket Gamer) is reporting that Facebook has recruited a number of engineers from Apple as part of the social media giant's efforts to develop a smart phone.
According to the report, this is not the first time that Facebook has investigated the possibility of releasing its own mobile hardware. An original attempt in 2010 failed due to the technical challenges involved, with Facebook then partnering with HTC on a second attempt: a project which is still said to be ongoing.
Facebook hasn't made any specific comments about these new rumors, beyond referencing a previous statement that read: "We're working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers."
Facebook has previously acknowledged the revenue problems it faces as more and more users access the service on their mobile phones, where ad-placement opportunities are far more limited than on larger devices. A device built from the ground-up to incorporate the social media service may help to solve some of these challenges.
