Brainsss Developer Discusses Piracy And Low Sales
"It's the nature of the digital age."
In an interview with CBS (via Joystiq), developer Lonely Few has stated that the two years spent working on recently released zombie action-strategy title Brainsss was a poor business move that has cost the studio thousands of dollars.
"From a business point of view, that was probably a mistake, but we really wanted our first iOS game to turn out how we wanted it to be," explained Yeong-Hao Han.
Co-developer Rod Green shared his thoughts on piracy and its impact on the limited success of the game: "In short we feel that most of the time these pirates aren't actually lost revenue at all, but more a chance to get the awareness of the game out there," he said.
"It's the nature of the digital age and something we felt we needed to just accept rather than waste time trying to prevent."
It paints a worrying picture for the health of the App Store, more so in the light of developer ustwo switching to a freemium model for Whale Trail. Despite releasing to critical acclaim, the game failed to turn a profit for the developer. We'll have more on the changes to Whale Trail in an upcoming feature.
