Anytime that a classic title is revisited in one form or another, retro gamers owe it to themselves to pay attention- at least until they can decide whether the collection is worth it (like Namco Museum for the PSP) or not (like Retro Atari Classics for Nintendo DS). Now another classic franchise is about to see a re-debut, this time on the Nintendo DS, but it looks to be mostly faithful to its original source. It has to be- the man who created it is fully behind the game's development.
The game is Space Invaders Revolution, and it will bring the classic alien-blasting action to the DS in a whole new light. Backing the whole project along with Taito is the original creator behind the game, Tomohiro Nishikado, who is now in a CEO position at Rising Star Games and eager to bring his new vision of an old classic to our shores. The results should see our hands by summer, but the final product sounds very enticing.
The first inclusion of Space Invaders Revolution will obviously be the classic arcade game itself, consisting of wave after endless wave of alien invaders who make their way down the playfield, ready to conquer your planet. It's up to you, a lone ground fighter, to blast these aliens and avoid deadly fire. It's a daunting task, but it can be done, as the game has clearly proven for years in arcades and on home consoles. Everything from the Atari 2600 to the Super NES has seen some form of the Invaders invade, and lucky European gamers even got their hands on Space Invaders Collection for the PS2.
The game will take full advantage of the Nintendo DS capabilities, as it will allow gamers to either use traditional controls or touch screen controls to destroy the alien foes. They'll need the skills, as the original game will still challenge. But the new mode featured here that will no doubt keep gamers hooked is the New Era mode, consisting of over 10 different challenging modes to take on, depending on the world locations. One will have you taking down aliens in a color coding system (you have to eliminate all the red aliens before the yellow ones, etc.); another will have you taking on one single invader who's armed to the teeth and takes several hits to kill. There'll be 60+ levels strewn across the game's modes, and the taste of old-school fun at its finest.
Having Nishikado-san on board for development should guarantee the quality of the game as we remember it, and the including of the New Era mode should put a fresh spin on the classic fun. We'll find out during the summer of the Invaders still have what it takes to take over the world, just like they did back in the early 80's.
