PlayStation Vita Fans Should Be Mad Over Angry Birds Trilogy Snub
Despite featuring a gorgeous touchscreen, Rovio has no plans to bring its compilation to Sony's portable. At least for now.
If you somehow missed playing the Angry Birds games and want to see what the fuss is about, the newly announced Angry Birds Trilogy seems like a great place to start. Coming soon to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and 3DS, the compilation includes three franchise titles: Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio. Why Rovio Entertainment chose to leave out Angry Birds Space is a mystery. Too soon?
That aside, it's great to see this insanely popular series make the jump from iOS and Android to more traditional machines, but there's a notable absence. Turns out, Activision won't publish the bundle on PlayStation Vita, and from where we stand, that's bad news for Sony; yes, despite the game still coming to PS3.
Whether or not you appreciate Angry Birds is irrelevant. This is one of the biggest intellectual properties in gaming, and while those aforementioned titles have been available on mobile for quite some time, any sane individual would agree that he or she wants Angry Birds on their platform of choice, if for nothing else than to boost said platform's appeal and chance at success. It's one of several ways to combat the smartphone and tablet craze that's slowly chipped away at consumer wallets. Pick your favorite athlete of all time, then ask yourself if this person (in their prime) could benefit a team. Yes, most definitely.
To that end, the fact that Rovio and Activision snubbed Vita may involve one or several factors. You could argue that Vita is too young and, therefore, unproven. At the same time, Activision plans to bring a new Call of Duty to the system later this year. Surely, it could assist Rovio in shoehorning three mobile apps onto a game card.
Besides, isn't Vita a perfect device for Angry Birds, with options to use either the touch screen or rear touch pad to unleash our perturbed friends from the slingshot? Angry Birds displayed on Vita's attractive screen? Sure. We'd love to play, except we can't. For now, there will be no Angry Birds Trilogy coming to PlayStation Vita, and quite frankly, this is yet another reason why Sony's $249.99 handheld is in trouble.
