Assassin's Creed III Liberation October 30 Release Date: A Potential Misfire
Ubisoft may inadvertently scalp its PlayStation Vita adventure.
If we were to create a list of this holiday season's top five handheld video games (mobile or otherwise), Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed III: Liberation would deserve a spot, and rightfully so. This isn't a port of the big-budget console experience. It's a different beast entirely, complete with a female heroine and unique setting in New Orleans. Suffice to say, it's one of PlayStation Vita's more highly anticipated offerings. Considering Vita's rocky start, Sony needs this game to do exceptionally well.
That said, it also debuts October 30, right alongside Assassin's Creed III proper, and we can't help but think this is a potentially horrible decision on Ubisoft's part. We see the company's logic in delivering a full AC smorgasbord in the hopes that hardcore gamers won't be able to resist making a double dip. Even we feel the urge to open our wallets.
On the flip side, the word "hardcore" is especially key, since those are the consumers more likely to pick up both games. Everyone else will probably make a choice, and we'll bet Assassin's Creed III wins. It all comes down to money, and how much the casual shopper can spend at any given time. Considering they also have the Assassin's Creed III Limited Edition to think about (at $120), it may be tough coming up with a sound financial reason to pick up Liberation, as both games (Limited or no) will cost $100 together; considering how big AC III is, who has the time to really dig into Liberation?
Don't get us wrong. Liberation looks outstanding, and a game we desperately want to play, but it shouldn't come out October 30. This isn't as easy as pointing to Electronic Arts and what it does with Madden and FIFA, releasing iterations for multiple platforms that are more or less the same. Ubisoft should simply choose another date, then throw marketing behind it to better get the word out. Otherwise, it runs the risk of upstaging what should be a stellar offering with a game from the same exact franchise.
