iOS And Android Games Of The Week: July 27, 2012
And the award for best iOS game goes to...a puzzler? Yes, and it's brilliant.
This week serves as a shining example why it's great to be a mobile gamer. There are a slew of quality iOS titles to choose from, including The Walking Dead: Episode 1, ORC: Vengeance and the bizarre yet surprisingly good Manos: The Hands of Fate, along with a bunch of games we've yet to get our hands on. In the end, though, a head-scratching puzzler took the top App Store spot. As for Android, slim pickings, we're afraid, so we dug into the release list and chose the best of the bunch.
iOS: Slydris (iPad only)
Radiangames made a name for itself creating highly polished and fun twin-stick shooters, leaving us to wonder if the developer would ever branch out from the genre to create something different. That question was answered this week, thanks to a shockingly superb puzzle game that's a cross between the old reliable classic, Tetris, and the musically-endowed brain teaser, Lumines. This basically amounts to the forming of The Mega Powers, but without Miss Elizabeth getting between "Macho Man" Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan. In other words, perfection. What ensues is a sliding block experience the likes of which we've never seen before, complimented by a handful of really engaging modes. Slydris is clearly Radiangames' finest effort to date. Bravo.
Android: Blazing Star
You know it's a rough week for Android when a 90s arcade shooter earns the best game nod, and that's exactly what happened, as SNK's Neo Geo classic, Blazing Star, blasted its way into Modojo history. What we have is a cool port of the original title, complete with six different ships, a Mission mode that lets you play stages out of sequence and two-person co-op via Bluetooth. Sluggish controls get in the way, but with swarms of enemies flooding the screen, tons of explosions and plenty of nostalgia, this is one 2D shooter you should definitely consider.
