iOS And Android Games Of The Week: August 31, 2012
Hack-and-slash fans are in for a treat this week, especially if they own both iOS (more specifically, an iPad) and Android devices. On the App Store side, we have a critically acclaimed Xbox Live Arcade title that made the successful leap to Apple's tablet. Meanwhile, Google Play received a violent fighter that takes inspiration from the gladiators of ancient Rome; it's also free-to-play, which is a big plus. On that note, it's time to find out which games drew top honors.
With so many smartphone and tablet games debuting on a weekly basis, we missed out on experiencing Bastion when it was first released on XBLA during July 2011, which is why we're so thrilled to be able to enjoy Supergiant Games' beautiful adventure on the iPad. In it, a mysterious kid sets off through gorgeous hand-painted worlds filled with a plethora of tricky enemies. All the while, a narrator does an outstanding job filling us in on the backstory, while also providing dramatic flair to the in-game action. To that end, the game was expertly ported to iPad, complete with user-friendly touch controls, auto attacks, a new Game Plus mode and more than 10 weapons to upgrade. Quite simply, a phenomenal game every iPad owner should download.
Android: Blood & Glory: Legend
Warriors fight to the death in this impressive sequel, where a battle tested hero sets off to exact revenge against a nefarious emperor. Attractive comic book panels compliment the vicious brawling, as players press left and right arrows to dodge incoming attacks, then respond by rapidly slashing the screen while unleashing special attacks and glorious strikes. A satisfying amount of weapons and armor will keep them upgrading constantly, and the option to earn free loot from winning battles and performing other tasks puts off having to make an in-app purchase, at least for a little while. Factor in Blood & Glory: Legend's impressive variety of combatants and arenas, and there's a lot to like about Glu Mobile's free-to-play effort.
