iOS And Android Games Of The Week: November 16, 2012
A sleepyhead wanders, while a developer tinkers with Tetris to great effect.
It was one heck of a week for puzzle games, especially for iPhone and iPad. We found ourselves locked in a fierce debate over which head-scratcher should prevail. Android, mercifully enough, was much easier to decide, thanks to a real gem from developer 11 bit studios. Which iOS and Android games should you download this weekend? Let's begin with...
iOS: Dream of Pixels
Tetris is arguably the greatest puzzle game of all time. Messing with its award-winning formula is borderline sacrilege. That is, unless you have a genius idea that breathes new life into the block-falling formula. Turns out, Dawn of Play stepped up to the plate and nailed a homerun with its surprise strategy effort, Dream of Pixels, a game that's sort of like Tetris, only in reverse. A large mass of blocks fall from the top of the screen, and it's your job to get rid of Tetrominos to clear lines. Imagine getting a Tetris, then having to take the whole thing apart. It takes some getting used to, and you really need to see this game in action to grasp the concept. Basically, it's a joy to play, and the dreamy presentation only adds to its appeal.

Android: Sleepwalker's Journey
Thankfully, none of us sleepwalk. The little guy in 11 bit studio's outstanding platformer, sadly, isn't so lucky. His misfortune winds up being your gain, as you clear objects from his path so the slumbering protagonist doesn't smack into things. It starts off simply, and before long, you'll need to deal with all manner of hazards while frantically gathering as many stars and crescent moons as humanly possible. Now add visually-stimulating 2D graphics, and there's whole lot to love about this charming effort.
