iOS And Android Games Of The Week: November 30, 2012
Feast upon this free-to-play MMO, then take down an AT-AT.
Talk about a strange week. At first, we expected Sega's Jet Set Radio to sweep both iOS and Android. Turns out, lackluster controls torpedoed that idea. Then, we figured Glu Mobile's Contract Killer Zombies 2 Origins would shamble its way into the Android winner's spot, but it didn't come out for that platform. This left room for a week's old favorite to make a return, while on the iPhone and iPad front, an MMO earned top honors.
iOS: Arcane Legends
It's rare to see a massively-multiplayer online game on iOS, for good reason. The genre doesn't work so well on smartphones and tablets, but don't tell that to the developers at Spacetime Studios. The company has made a name for itself releasing MMOs on mobile, and the team hit another high note with Arcane Legends. Granted, it does little we haven't seen before. Players choose between three classes (Sorcerer, Warrior, Rogue), assign pets and go on World of Warcraft style missions. That doesn't mean, however, that the game comes up short. On the contrary, the accessible controls, entertaining combat and co-op adventuring will keep players questing for a long time. Not perfect or original, but a fun time nonetheless. Android: Angry Birds Star Wars
A game so nice, it managed to win twice. Normally, we don't allow repeats, but considering the slim pickings on Android this week, Angry Birds Star Wars managed to sneak into the winner's circle, thanks to a free update that includes 20 additional levels inspired by The Empire Strikes Back, namely Hoth, the ice planet that opens the beloved film. With it, players get to take down AT-ATs and Probe Droids, along with the birds' arch enemies, the pigs. On top of that, Princess Leia joins the growing cast of heroes, introducing her signature ability to these tricky puzzles. A worthy update, if we ever saw one.
