iOS And Android Games Of The Week: January 11, 2013
Thankfully, iOS and Android releases have picked up steam after the slim pickings from week one. That said, today's iPhone and iPad title was inspired by an Xbox Live and PlayStation Network smash hit, while on the Google Play side, Shaquille O'Neal threw dirt onto his previous starring role, the venomous 1994 fighting game, Shaq Fu. Without further ado, the envelope, please.
iOS: Joe Danger Touch [Download]
We spent countless hours pulling off death-defying stunts in the original Joe Danger, so the news that Hello Games would bring a new entry to iOS had us salivating. There was just one issue. How would the developers handle the controls? Answer: by ditching the d-pad/analog stick for swipe mechanics. The result is a wonderfully addictive title that delivers a uniquely satisfying experience on smartphones and tablets. Easily one of the best games of the year.
Shaq Fu was Electronic Arts' failed attempt to throw one of the NBA's most recognizable stars into a 2D beat-em-up. Not a bad idea really, but the final product was quite horrible. One Spear Entertainment's ShaqDown, on the other hand, is quite good. In it, Shaq plows through three different stages pummeling zombie mutants. Simple swipe controls let you navigate platforms with ease while building the combo meter, and the virtual currency, Shaqra (we can't make this up), allows you to buy new outfits to boost the NBA champ's abilities; and yes, the real Shaq provided voiceovers. Goofy? You bet, and we totally dig it.
