King Kong: The Official Mobile Game of the Movie
King Kong: The Official Mobile Game of the Movie is quite the long title, but hey, it's a big movie, and could be a big mobile game!
There's an awful big gamble going into the forthcoming remake of the classic film King Kong. But I have faith in it, mainly because director Peter Jackson is behind the project, as well as a stellar cast and an effects team more than up to task. But what of the games? They too apparently have talent behind them. The Beyond Good & Evil team is finishing up work on the console editions, while Gameloft has put together a worthy adventure for cell phone owners. King Kong: The Official Mobile Game of the Movie is certainly enough to make you go ape.
King Kong: The Official Mobile Game of the Movie features nine levels featuring three of the environments inspired by the film. The game is also divided into two types of stages. The first involves you taking control of hero Jack, who, along with computer-controlled girl Ann, goes about the stage, using blow-darts to knock natives unconscious while solving puzzles similar to a format of the old Prince of Persia games. The second type of stage involves you taking control of Kong himself as he jumps around platforms and beats the living stuffing out of dinosaurs, both large and small. It's this type of mixture you don't really see in games anymore, and both provide a fresh approach to the action.
See, there's something here for both puzzle fans and action fans. Sure, Jack's segments may be slightly weak in comparison to Kong's dino-pounding, but it's a mix that somehow manages to work and will draw gamers in with the gameplay offered by both segments. The graphics look appealing enough, with lush jungle settings and strong animation that details Kong's attacks quite nicely, as well as giving players the opportunity to see where they're aiming Jack's darts.
The addition of strategic parts, like helping Kong work alongside walls or assisting Ann when she needs to be kept in one piece, help greatly. Sound is about average but at least it doesn't grow grating.
King Kong: The Mobile Official Game of the Movie is a fine download, especially for those of us looking forward to the upcoming Peter Jackson film. Is it perfect? No, the stages run to their end a bit too quickly and once the game's completely done, you'll be visiting familiar territory. However, it's one of the better licensed games out there, offering you both sides of the story and letting you choose your personal favorite. It'll certainly make you go (Ed. -- wait for it) "bananas".
What's Hot: You get to play as both Jack and Kong, and it gets you geared for the upcoming movie!
What's Not: Not the most depth we've seen, though still fun.
