iPhone And iPad Games Of The Week: May 10, 2013
When it came to iPhone and iPad gaming, this week didn't have much to cheer about. Granted, a few quality titles appeared on the App Store, but the list of releases lacked pizazz. That said, two games stood out. The winner sends you on a frantic race through congested city streets, while the runner up takes you back to World War I, AKA the conflict overshadowed by World War II.
Sorry Android fans, but we didn't see much on Google Play. The idea was to award Gameloft's Blitz Brigade, but connection issues kept us from experiencing the game as the developers intended.
We get it, everyone hates Zynga, right? Well stop right there. The company's financial issues and stream of clones notwithstanding, the publisher still releases quality titles like Running With Friends. Available free-of-charge, this endless runner borrows elements from the competition but injects plenty of personality, thanks to a running with the bulls theme, intense swipe-heavy gameplay and asynchronous multiplayer, which is something we don't often see in this crowded subgenre. Competing against friends is a blast, and the addition of boosts and leaderboards adds to the fun. Give this one a try.
Runner Up: Sid Meier's Ace Patrol [Download: iOS]
Civilization guru Sid Meier took a welcome crack at mobile gaming and succeeded with his turn-based dogfighting game set in WWI. There's a wide selection of aircraft to choose from, and we've already spent hours promoting pilots, competing with fellow aces and mastering the single-player challenges.
