Japan: Four new DS colors revealed
Nintendo take a hint from Apple's book with their new DS flavors...
Nintendo of Japan recently announced that four new DS colors would be available starting March 24. On that day "Graphite Black" and "Pure White" DS models will be available, with "Turquoise Blue" and "Candy Pink" set to follow about a month later on April 21. Nintendo has made no announcement regarding new DS colors for America, but it would be very surprising if things stay that way for long.
The newly announced colors resemble Apple's line of colors for their incredibly popular iPod Mini, a fact that is surely more than coincidence. With the PSP regularly outselling the DS week to week in Japan, sometimes by a margin of almost 2:1, Nintendo's ability to manufacture the DS in greater numbers and with greater variety should give the handheld a much-needed shot in the arm, until some of the sytem's bigger titles are released.
This color announcement represents the latest strike in a heated handheld battle being waged between Sony and Nintendo, for the hearts and wallets of Japanese consumers. Nintendo jumped out to wider lead than most expected, thanks to their ability to manufacture far more DSs than Sony could keep up with. Sony has slowly and steadily been closing that gap, thanks to a more steady stream of software being released for the PSP, post-launch.
Although it's all but a certainty that these new colors will cause a DS sales spike, it is unknown whether the impact will be sustainable, or enough to stem the PSPs advances on the DS's current title of leading next-gen handheld.
