Think Bubble Bobble, but with a gravity twist and spaceships. Fun!
It's kind of weird how the most obscure puzzle game manages to grow quicker on you than a fungus after sitting around in the hospital for a month. But that's exactly what Glu Mobile's Astropop does, providing the most simplest of concepts but then hooking you in for what seems to be hours at a time. Next thing you know, it's later in the day, your thumbs are slightly numb, and you're still entranced by the colors on-screen.
The game works kind of like Klax to an extent, but in a bit of an opposite. You control a spaceship that must capture colored tiles and then shoot them back up at similarly colored tiles in particular patterns (straight, vertical, or diagonal) to eliminate them. They stack up quickly, so you must think fast or find yourself overflowing with tiles. The gameplay keeps up nicely and remains addictive through its Classic and Survival modes.
The graphics and audio are nothing to scream about but at least they're solid and represent where they're supposed to. It would've been nice to see some kind of two player mode come about in this game, but Astropop still manages to hold up its end of the deal and give you hours of puzzling fun. Pop it on your cell phone already.
What's Hot: Addictive and insane in later levels.
What's Not: No multiplayer mode.
