Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story
Dodge. Duck. Dip. Dive. Dodge. Repeat.
ANOTHER licensed cell phone game? Man, usually when I run into the glut of these, they become something of an unfavorable lot. Remember XXX: State of the Union? Yeah, neither do I. Fortunately, some companies still know how to produce a game right, and Knockabout Games and Superscape have teamed up to give us a great on-the-go dodgeball experience that just happens to use the license from last year's hilarious comedy, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.
The game doesn't contain the likenesses of Vince Vaughn or Ben Stiller anywhere, taking away from the humor of the game. However, it does contain a majority of the teams from the movie, including the Globo Gym and the Average Joes, your team. You can get the hang of the controls in practice and then take on numerous teams in a tournament, hopefully getting to the final round against Globo and unseating them to become dodgeball champs.
The game features a smart gameplay system that's actually rather fun, and the presentation, while a bit on the simple side, gets the job done in terms of looking and sounding like dodgeball should. Two things keep the game from perfection, though. First, I would've killed for a two player mode. And secondly, really, what's wrong with having Stiller and Vaughn in the game? A few extra bucks would've made all the difference. But oh well, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story is a pleasant surprise and will give you plenty of opportunities to dodge, duck, dip, dive, and...dodge.
What's Hot: A more fun game than the license lets on; great gameplay.
What's Not: Some of the film's humor is sorely missing.
