Tons Of Guns
Glu Games' Tons of Guns would have been better off as a free-roaming first-person shooter, or at the very least, an on-rails action game similar to Namco Bandai's Time Crisis. Instead, the publisher went with a series of one-on-one gunfights where the goal is to kill your adversary without the benefit of cover or health pick-ups. With little plot to speak of, this free-to-play blast-fest turns into a mindless race to acquire/upgrade more powerful weapons while slaughtering bozos.
There are cool ideas, starting with the reloading sequences. Automatic rifles, shotguns and some handguns each possess unique touch screen reloads that require you to tap twice to load a double-barreled shotgun, for example, or swipe left to yank out an empty machine gun clip and swipe right to insert a new one.
That's all well and good, except for the fact that you'll take damage while doing this. Not only that, but your adversary can move right/left across the screen, whereas your character remains in a fixed position. While not the biggest disadvantage, aiming via the iPhone or iPad's gyroscope comes with its share of difficulties. If anything, Glu should have included the option for an analog stick.
As the title implies, guns are supposed to steal the show and Glu delivers on that front. You'll quickly unlock a variety of dangerous toys to upgrade, and with daily/special events to complete, it won't be long before you have an arsenal. Virtual currency becomes more important later as you need upgrades to defeat the game's toughest bosses, but you'll still be able to make it far enough without having to open the wallet, if you so choose.
Problem is, Tons of Guns is just too basic for its own good. Being unable to move makes each fight unfair, especially the toughest ones, while the aforementioned aiming controls are a big no. Not a terrible game, but there are better shooters available.
