Movie Studios Cut UMD Production
A number of future titles are axed
A report from Variety has revealed that a number of studios are beginning to slow their UMD movie production due to poor sales that did not meet expectations. Paramount Home Entertainment, Warner Home Video, and even Sony Pictures Home Entertainment are now halting the releases of various titles previously announced to support the medium, with Warner cutting as many as six titles from its lineup.
Sony, however, will be attempting a different move by releasing movie bundles, containing both a DVD and UMD of a single movie in one complete package for a cost of under $30.
Furthermore, the company also has plans to release an adapter for the PSP that would allow UMD movies to be viewed via television. This is a function that has been sorely missed from the system since its release, but whether or not the new addition will help boost UMD sales back into an acceptable range remains to be seen.
