Where's My Water? 2
When the original Where's My Water? released for iOS and Android, it immediately joined our list of favorite games, with its unique physics-based puzzles and charming presentation. Disney Mobile surprised its audience today with a sequel that once again follows Swampy the Alligator and friends, with a focus on bath time.
Like the original, Where's My Water? 2 is set up with a series of puzzles where you activate switches, eliminate hazards and get water to our hero and his pals, while at the same time collecting ducks across each stage.
The foundation remains intact, as you'll carefully figure out each level and ferry the water - and occasionally steam -- to its destination. Some of the opening levels are easy, but challenges open up that will test your puzzle solving skills. A few of these are deviously hard - even for a Disney title - but you can always buy a solution if it drives you nuts.
Where's My Water? 2 provides a number of unlockable power-ups, including a vacuum that attracts water to ducks, among others. You can also find collectibles throughout the 100+ level world, including special ducks - like the gladiator and astronaut - or other goodies. We're not sure what use an alligator has for a garden gnome, but it's in there.
This would be a perfect sequel if it weren't for the poor decision to shift to a free-to-play model. Throughout the game, you'll work your way through a charge meter in the corner. Once it empties, the only way to keep playing is to ask friends through Facebook or put down some money. You can wait 15 or so minutes to play, but you'll only get enough energy for one stage.
It's unfortunate Disney didn't charge a flat free up front, as it did with the original. This seems unfair, especially to parents forced to drop a few dollars just to keep their kids happy. On a side note: a parental feature is built into the game, so you can control just how much they purchase.
The visual presentation provides the best of both worlds - cute characters that will entertain players of all ages and ingenious level design that will boggle even the smartest puzzle fans. The sound, however, consists of character grunts, simple water effects and music that quickly wears out its welcome. You're better off turning on your own music library.
Had Where's My Water? 2 followed the same pricing structure as the original, it would've fared much better. It's a good sequel; just one that may drain your wallet.
