Will this game make you a Pac-Maniac, or Pac-Mad?
When Pac-Man surfaced during the 80's, it created a phenomenon that, to this day, remains unmatched. A simple game featuring a pac-man, several ghosts, and a playfield filled with big and small dots actually created something of a gameplay experience that I still remember fondly in my years as a gaming journalist. The craze continued for years, and still has a place in gaming today in several classic collections, as well as with revampings left and right.
Among those revampings is Pac-Mania 3D, a port of the arcade game of the same name. This title is basically Pac-Man reimagined in a quasi-3D environment, with fancier graphics, playfields made from anything like forest trees to Lego blocks, and a new jumping play dynamic that came in handy in rough spots. And the game has plenty, including more ghosts and some that move even faster than Pac-Man. Later levels even have ghosts that jump as well, if only to sabotage Pac-Man in midair.
This wasn't a perfect game by any means. The playfield's view was limited to a small area around Pac-Man, meaning that an ambush by ghosts was more than likely too many times. Also, it seems to lack the simple touches of the original Pac-Man, going for too much when it didn't need to. Still, it has plenty of pleasures surrounding it, and I still had fun with it. The cell phone edition is pretty much a straight port, with good graphics, fun gameplay that manages to keep up in the port, and a small but still quirky sound presentation that can't be beat.
So if you liked this remix in any way shape or form, or just want to see what the next level of Pac-Man was all about, Pac-Mania 3D is a worthy download. However, those seeking a game as good as the original would be better off just sticking with the first one. An instant classic this isn't. But, then again, at least it's not a letdown either. Give it a look.
What's Hot: A nice twist on the Pac-Man formula; a Lego-built level!
What's Not: Not much past the original game; limited playfield view.
