Monsta Brick Breaker
Almost a breakout success.
DanLab's Monsta Brick Breaker takes the classic Breakout formula and infuses it with the life of some adorably cute monster designs. You yourself are in charge of guiding a shield-carrying behemoth across the screen in order to keep a bouncing ball in play. Along the way, you'll acquire power-ups to help you out, including a magnet, rockets and a "Suppla" ability that turns you into an unstoppable laser-shooting machine.
Monsta Brick Breaker doesn't reinvent Breakout's wheel by any means, rather it sticks with what works and rolls with it. The end result is responsive and enjoyable gameplay, with plenty of special effects to spice up the gameplay. It looks good too, and the monster animations are similarly impressive. Not only do you get a lot of content in this free to play game - around 20-30 levels are stuffed into the game's three worlds - it won't cost you an arm and a leg to unlock everything. Not something we get to say too often.
As adorable and fun as Monsta Brick Breaker is, it does suffer from a handful of drawbacks. There are pop-up ads throughout, for example, and it's easy to click on one by accident. Doing so can even crash the game, forcing you to delete and reinstall the game - annoying to say the least. The repetitive music also grates after a while, but you can at least turn the sound off in the options screen if it really gets too much.
Even allowing for these ad hiccoughs, Monsta Brick Breaker is still an enjoyable addition to the ball-and-paddle genre. Let's just hope the developers can come up with a patch that doesn't make these minor problems more monstrous.
