War of the Worlds
Want to ruin Tom Cruise's perfect world? Oh, wait, Katie Holmes already did. ZING!
It's not very often that you're given an invasion game where you play the opposite role, moving forward to destroy the human race instead of trying to save it. THQ's recent release, Destroy All Humans!, made a push for such a theme with its release last month. And now comes the mobile game War of the Worlds, based on the Steven Spielberg/Tom Cruise movie of the same name. The game takes a different twist from the film and puts you in the shoes of an alien tripod that's out to wreak havoc upon the earth and collect humans.
The game controls like an old-school shooter with elements of Rampage thrown in for good measure, and it's really great, if somewhat quick, fun. You have to move your cursor around and blast different military vehicles before eventually getting to a boss fight that will stop you from going further.
The gameplay is efficient enough for a game such as this, and it looks surprisingly good for the style of game that's provided here. The alien tripod moves along nicely, and the action rarely lets up. The sound effects are sparse, but there are some neat explosions here and there, as well as the theme from the film.
The only problem with the game is that it's too short and sweet for its own good. It's got a high enough difficulty level to really provide some fun, though, and considering that not many movie-licensed games innovate like this one, I'll forgive it. War of the Worlds is most definitely worth conquering for your cell phone.
What's Hot: Great concept; fun gameplay; no Tom Cruise (for guys)
What's Not: Way too short a game; no Tom Cruise (for girls)
