Apple Announces iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
At long last, they're finally here!
The day has finally come, and the iPhone 6 has been officially announced at the Apple press conference held in Cupertino, CA today, and in two different flavors at that: the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. Both phones are packed with stunning new features, many of which we've been seeing cropping up in the numerous leaks over the past few months.
The iPhone 6 is 4.7 inches, where the iPhone 6 Plus is 5.5 inches, with 1224 x 740 and full HD, respectively. Both phones are less than 7 mm thick (6.9 mm and 6.71 mm), which makes these the thinnest, most powerful iPhones yet.
They've transcended a Retina screen for Retina HD as well, with a new screen that's sRGB-accurate, with an IPS crystal display.
All of this, combined with a new generation A8 chip that allows for 25% percent faster CPU performance and 50% more energy efficiency than the iPhone 5. Developers like Ubisoft, Epic, Gameloft, EA, and Disney have already signed on to create games and apps for the powerful new device as well.
Tim Cook calls it the "biggest advancement in iPhone," and so far the two models certainly haven't disappointed.
Both models come in gold, silver, and space grey. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus is the largest phone Apple has ever created, and while its large design is a bit of a roadblock for some, the various functions are designed to replace your wallet.
Aside from simply being Apple's largest iPhone yet and what many refer to as a "phablet," the iPhone 6 Plus is made with what Apple refers to as "ion-strengthened glass." The back of the phone is just as sleek as ever, crafted from anodized aluminum with a stainless steel Apple logo.
The iPhone 6 will run you $199 for 16 GB and $299 for 64 GB, while the previous models will receive a reduction in price as well. The iPhone 5c will now be free, whereas the iPhone 5s will start at $99.
The iPhone 6 Plus starts at $299 for 16 GB, $399 for 64 GB, and $499 for a brand new 128 GB model. That's the most storage we've ever seen on an iPhone.
Additionally, iOS 8 will be releasing September 17, and will be available for all devices from iPhone 4s and higher.
Pre-orders for all models begin September 12, with shipments beginning September 19.
