Drop Wizard

Lo-fi aesthetic and retro awesomness make this one to watch.

Drop Wizard is one of the most familiar-looking titles out there on the App Store right now, and it bears a strong resemblance to titles like Bubble Bobble and other arcade favorites back in the heyday of the arcade. But it doesn't only adopt a familiar look. It also relies on tried and true mechanics to weave an adorable story.

The Good

As the adorable Wizard himself, you need to clear out all the enemies you possibly can from the screen by shooting stars out from your wand. Drop down from platform and go to the next platform in order to toss out ammunition, as the platforms continue to loop. It's an autorunner as well, so you'll need to be strategic about how you approach everything. You can chain together combos, but be careful about figuring out where to go next. It can be challenging to do this, but a lot of fun as well if you know what you're doing.

The Bad

Amongst all the puzzle-solving, it can be difficult to earn three stars for each level. This means it's bad news for completionists or those who want to put forth their all in order to come out smelling like roses. Unfortunately, there is no support for special peripherals the game would be absolutely perfect for. For instance, you can't use the iCade, and you can't use iCloud sync.

The Verdict

Drop Wizard is a clever and colorful throwback that makes sense at a glance, but it is unfortunately riddled with some very frustrating problems that make it not such a great choice for some gamers.
